Health experts say Africa must urgently invest in stronger diagnostic systems if the continent is to slow down the rising threat of Antimicrobial Resistance. Speaking at the 2nd Special Convention on Diagnostics, Africa Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) Chief Executive Officer Nqobile Ndlovu warned that AMR has already become a silent pandemic with weak diagnostic capacity, poor surveillance and limited funding placing millions at risk. Globally, 700,000 people die every year due to drug-resistant infections, with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for more than 200,000 deaths, and Kenya losing over 8,000 people annually.
