Stakeholders in the water sector have observed that Kenya's water resources are under severe strain, with per capita availability currently estimated at less than 500 cubic meters, far below the national threshold of 1,000 cubic meters.Speaking at the launch of the UNESCO International Centre for Water Security and Sustainable Management (i-WSSM) Nairobi office, experts noted that the scarcity, coupled with groundwater depletion, uneven resource distribution, and inadequate wastewater management, demands innovative and region-specific solutions. The launch was followed by a workshop focused on Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), an approach that treats and reuses wastewater to replenish aquifers. This practice, experts noted, not only addresses water scarcity but also mitigates pollution and enhances environmental sustainability.
