Parliament is seeking to pass a law that will cushion legislators against paying back gratuity monies when they are reelected for a second term as this grants them pension benefits. Currently MPs serving one term or lose in the subsequent reelection bid are entitled to a 31% rate gratuity, However if they manage to secure a reelection for a second term they are expected to payback the gratuity for them to be pensionable. The bill seeks to give members an option to choose to be paid either gratuity or pension, with those who opting for gratuity to not be forced to payback the previously earned gratuity.
