Farmers in Makueni embracing sand conservation

Enactment of the Makueni County Sand Conservation Act in 2015 followed by an ambitious sand conservation campaign has transformed most villages in the semi-arid devolved unit where locals can now access sufficient water for domestic use and irrigation, before the enactment of the act, unregulated sand harvesting and trade had resulted to a dire shortage of water in river beds, drying boreholes, increased soil erosion among other environmental issues.
