Haya ndiyo unapaswa kuyafahamu kuhusu M23, chimbuko lao, na mgogoro unaosambaa huko Jamhuri ya Kidemokrasia ya Congo. Kikundi cha waasi wa M23, au Harakati za Machi 23, zimepewa jina hilo kutokana na mkataba wa amani wa 2009 kati ya serikali ya Congo na kikundi cha waasi kinacho ongozwa na Watutsi, CNDP. Makubaliano hayo yaliahidi kuwaingiza waasi katika jeshi la taifa na ulinzi kwa jamii za Watutsi lakini halikutekelezwa kikamilifu, na kuzusha uasi wa M23 mwaka 2012. Licha ya kushindwa mwaka 2013, kikundi hicho kilirejea tena mwaka 2021, na kuchochea mgogoro huko mashariki mwa Congo. Wiki hii, M23 ilichukua udhibiti wa Goma, mji wenye watu takriban milioni 2 na kituo cha kibinadamu, ukiwemo uwanja wake wa ndege, na kukata njia muhimu za kufikisha misaada. Shambulizi hilo liliuwa watu kadhaa walioachwa mitaani, hospitali zilielemewa, na taarifa za uporaji na uvunjifu wa haki za binadamu. Maelfu wameukimbia mji huo, wakati waandamanaji mjini Kinshasa walishambulia balozi kadhaa za nchi ambazo zinazishutumu kuwa zinaisaidia M23, ikiwemo Rwanda. DRC inaishutumu Rwanda kwa kuisaidia M23 ili kunyakua utajiri wa madini yaliyoko katika kanda hiyo – madai ambayo yanakanushwa na Rwanda, licha ya ripoti za Umoja wa Mataifa kuunga mkono tuhuma za Congo. Mgogoro huo unaakisi vita kadhaa vya Congo huko nyuma, ambavyo viliuwa mamilioni na kuuyumbisha ukanda huo.
