Stakeholders from the police department, community organizations and animal rights advocates have called for a ban on the sale, purchase and transportation of donkeys to save them from extinction. Speaking in Kithyoko town on the border of Machakos and Kitui counties after a meeting to assess the safety of the animal, the stakeholders decried increased cases of donkeys being slaughtered. The slaughter is said to be happening in forests and the meat is smuggled into the market, especially in Kitui, Embu and Machakos counties. They have also called for renewed awareness among the community about the importance of the animal, especially in arid areas.
