The Ministry of Health says a new partnership to manufacture schistosomiasis, or bilharzia, treatment locally will significantly strengthen Kenya’s fight against neglected tropical diseases.
Head of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Programme, Dr Wycliff Omondi, says the disease burden remains high, particularly in Lake-Region counties. He says the government has welcomed a partnership between global healthcare firm Merck and Kenya’s Universal Corporation Limited in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. The agreement will see Kenya begin local production of arpraziquantel, a child-friendly version of the bilharzia drug.
