The government has directed striking university lecturers to resume duty immediately, warning that their industrial action has already been declared illegal by the courts. Speaking in Mombasa during the opening of a week-long teachers’ conference on pre-service teacher training and employment, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba urged members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) to call off the strike, which began last week. Ogamba stated that the continued withdrawal of services constitutes contempt of court, emphasizing that the government had already demonstrated goodwill by disbursing Ksh 2.73 billion to address part of the lecturers’ demands.
