Close to 150 school-going girls in Machakos who have given birth, now have an opportunity to return to their studies, under a program dubbed "2nd chance to the girl child. The programme is spearheaded by Machakos County women representative Joyce Kamene Kasimbi, and it targets girls who became pregnant while in school, providing them a path to continue their education after giving birth. Reflecting on the significant rise in teenage pregnancies during the covid-19 pandemic, Kasimbi explained that this alarming increase inspired her to launch the "2nd chance to the girl child" initiative. Many young girls who gave birth during this period were excelling academically, but their education was interrupted, causing many parents to lose hope.
