Embattled National Transport and Safety Authority Director General, George Njao, is facing backlash from road safety lobby groups after defying a directive by the Authority’s Board to proceed on terminal leave ahead of his retirement. The Board, chaired by Hon. Khatib Mwashetani, had on October 29 resolved that Njao hand over office to acting DG Jacob Sissey before his official exit on December 1. However, Njao has reportedly refused to vacate office, drawing condemnation from lobby leaders who accuse him of plotting to extend his tenure illegally. Road Safety Association of Kenya Chair David Kiarie and Secretary General John Mutisya demanded Njao’s immediate departure, blaming him for failing to curb rising road accidents. They urged the Roads and Transport Ministry to enforce the Board’s decision, warning of possible legal action if the stalemate persists.
