A farmer in Makueni county has embraced traditional farming and modern science to boost food production and protect extinction of plant and animal species. Benedetta Kyengo has shifted to Agro-ecological farming at a time the UN office for disaster risk reduction has painted a grim picture of nearly 30% biodiversity loss owing to poor land use. Biodiversity loss contributes to the release of nitrous oxide also known as ‘laughing gas’ a harmful greenhouse gas that depletes the ozone layer and exposes the earth to solar radiation. Our reporter Opicho Chemtai toured her farm and brings us details of how Benedetta is laughing her way to the bank and why the emission of the ‘laughing gas’ into the atmosphere is no joke.
