The County Government of Homa-Bay, through its Health Department, has pledged its commitment to continue providing essential services to HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis patients in the wake of the donor funding withdrawal by the U.S. government. The department’s chief Officer, Dr. Kevin Osuri, says the recent funding cuts will pose significant challenges in meeting the healthcare needs of the vulnerable. He stated that there are still sufficient drugs available to sustain the affected patients for the next three months as the county awaits further communication from U.S. authorities regarding the future of the funding. The funding cut has resulted in the loss of 971 jobs within the health sector, positions that were previously held by staff deployed by NGOs under USAID hence disrupting regular operations. The executive order that terminated financial support for such medical services was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
