Bandy Kiki received threats after she came out as a young lesbian woman from Cameroon, where it’s a crime to be LGBT+. Fearing for her safety, she sought asylum in the UK. In nations like Algeria, Burundi, Eritrea, Egypt and Ghana, homosexuality is illegal and can attract up to seven years jail time in some countries.
