Video iliyochukuliwa kwa simu ya mkononi ilionyesha vipande kadhaa vya Daraja la Scott Key likiporomoka ndani ya maji ya Mto Patapsco baada ya meli iliyobeba mizigo yenye bendera ya Singapore inayoitwa Dali kugonga nguzo inayoshikilia daraja majira ya saa kumi na moja alfajiri (05:30 UTC) Jumanne.
Mamlaka zinasema magari kadhaa yalikuwa juu ya daraja wakati ajali hiyo ilipotokea.
Maafisa wa huduma za dharura wa Baltimore kikosi cha watafutaji na waokoaji kinaendelea kuwatafuta watu wasiopungua 20 ambao wanasadikiwa kuwa ndani ya maji.
Magari kadhaa yalianguka kwenye maji baridi na waokoaji walikuwa wakitafuta zaidi ya watu saba.
Wanasema vyombo vyao vimebaini kuna magari yaliyotumbukia mtoni.
Inaonekana Meli hiyo iligonga nguzo moja ya daraja Fransis scott key Bridge ambapo lilivunjika vipande, kulingana na picha zilibandikwa katika mtandao wa X.
Meli hiyo ilisababisha moto ulitoa moshi mweusi ulopaa hewani.
Meli hiyo inayosafiri na bendera ya Singapore na jina la Dali ilikuwa imeondoka bandarini dakika 25 zilizopita ikielekea Singapore.
Synergy Marine Corp, Wasimamizi wa meli ya Dali, wametoa taarifa wakisema meli hiyo iligonga moja ya nguzo za daraja hilo na kuwa mabaharia wake wote, wakiwemo nahodha wa meli hiyo wamesalimika na hakuna ripoti zozote za majeruhi.
Daraja hilo lenye urefu wa kilomita 2.5 lenye umri wa miaka 47 ni kiungo kikuu katika njia kuu zinazounganisha majimbo zinazo zunguka mji wa Baltimore, moja ya bandari kadhaa kubwa kabisa za Marekani.
Ilipewa jina la Francis Scott Key, mwandishi wa “The Star Spangled Banner,” shairi ambalo baadae lilitengenezwa kuwa muziki na hatimaye kuwa ni nyimbo ya taifa ya Marekani.
Key alihamasishwa kuandika shairi baada ya kushuhudia mashambulizi ya bomu yaliyofanywa na Uingereza katika ngome kuu ya jeshi la Marekani huko Baltimore mwaka 1814. - VOA NEWS, AP, Reuters
