Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a raft of measures to address cross-border fishing disputes, criminal gangs, gender-based violence, and illicit alcohol trade in Kisumu and the wider Nyanza region.
Speaking after chairing a regional and county security meeting in Kisumu, the CS stated that insecurity on Lake Victoria, largely caused by cross-border disputes between Kenyan and Ugandan fishermen, remains a persistent challenge.
“The presence of our security officers on the lake must be enhanced, not just in terms of numbers but also with equipment. His Excellency the President has set aside resources under the security sector modernisation programme to provide more boats and facilities to enable our officers to secure the border,” said Mr Murkomen.
The CS disclosed that Kenya and Uganda have a joint cooperation agreement on managing Lake Victoria’s fish resources, following a review meeting attended by President Yoweri Museveni.
