A proposal to amend the Price Control Legislation of 2011 could give the government the power to fix prices for all essential goods regardless of market conditions. The price control amendment bill, of 2024, spearheaded by nominated senator tabitha mutanda, will give the treasury cabinet secretary powers to set the maximum and minimum prices of all essential goods which include maize, maize flour, wheat, wheat flour, rice, cooking fat or oil, among others
