Parents and pupils of Vikutsa Primary School, in Isukha East Ward, Shinyalu Constituency, have staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the indefinite closure of the school by health officials due to a lack of toilets and clean water. The facilities are in deplorable condition, making them unusable. According to Patrick Aluvisia, a member of the school’s board, health officers visited the school and after inspection, issued a closure notice, stating that it would remain shut until water supply and proper sanitation facilities put in place. The parents are however opposing the move claiming a 10-year land tussle has been the hindrance in putting up the required facilities and other infrastructural developments. They are now calling for government’ intervention since there are no nearby schools to transfer their kids as the closure has disrupted their learning activities.
