Kenya is grappling with an influx of undocumented migrants. On Sunday, November 2, 2025, 44 Eritrean nationals were arrested and detained in Bungoma, Western Kenya, on suspicion of being in the country illegally.
The Eritreans have appealed to the Kenyan government to grant them asylum and accommodation in refugee camps, claiming they fled their homeland due to the ongoing conflict.
However, the situation is not unique to Kenya. Across Africa, millions of people migrate every year in search of safety, opportunity, and a better life, and among them are some of the 80 million people living with disabilities.
The same story is unfolding in Kenya’s neighbour, Uganda. Migrants there, including those living with disabilities, are striving for inclusion, as told in this story by Ugandan national Tonny Mulenzi of the Baraza Media Lab.
This is where the Data Storytelling Fellowship comes in, helping storytellers bring out the human faces behind the numbers. It gives them the tools to tell real stories like these with empathy and truth, so people can see, feel, and understand what others are going through across Africa.
