The High Court in Meru has referred a class action petition by Mau Mau veterans to Chief Justice Martha Koome for formation of a three-judge bench. The petition, filed by 30 former freedom fighters, accuses the government of committing human rights violations against Mau Mau veterans after independence. The veterans, represented by lawyer Tom Macharia, are also pushing for the implementation of a 10 billion shillings Restorative Justice Fund proposed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015, as well as full enforcement of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission recommendations. Justice Heston Nyaga ruled that the case raises significant constitutional issues affecting thousands of freedom fighters and allowed the petitioners to advertise the suit in a national newspaper to invite more interested parties.
