    Cultural norms and lack of economic empowerment for women have been identified as major causes of gender-based violence in Lamu county. Stakeholders say despite ongoing campaigns and government intervention efforts, the outdated traditions continue to fuel abuse in the region. Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum held to review progress in combating GBV and child abuse, participants expressed concern that many victims particularly women remain trapped in abusive relationships due to financial dependency.
