The Toror Tea Factory board has demanded the resignation of John Chebochok as director following international pressure over allegations of sexual harassment. Chebochok, a former contractor for Finlays, was exposed in a 2023 BBC documentary titled "sex for work: the true cost of our tea," which accused him of sexually harassing female workers. His election as director prompted major buyers, including Finlays and Lipton teas and infusions, to cease purchasing tea from Toror Tea Factory until he is removed from his position. A lengthy meeting held today between elected leaders and the board chairman Japheth Chepkwony announced that Chebochok has not yet been officially appointed as director and the decision will be made at a special general meeting on 18th July 2024. The chairman assured international tea buyers that despite the controversy surrounding Chebochok's election, tea processing at Toror Tea Factory continues to meet the required standards and procedures. The farmers remain adamant that they chose him for a reason and that his personal issues are not their concern.
