The national government has moved in to address the ongoing water supply crisis affecting Kilifi and Mombasa counties after an outcry from residents and tourism investors. A team of ministry officials led by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eric Muga, visited the county where they discovered that three major water pumps had broken down. The intervention comes at a time when Kilifi County has been facing an acute water shortage, with the Kilifi Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO) and its sister organisation, the Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO), struggling to meet their supply demands. The government has now turned to solar power solutions to end the persistent water crisis.
