The event, organized by the Mombasa Press Club in collaboration with local partners, was held under the theme “Chat GBV: Raising Awareness on AI-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence Against Women Journalists.” Speaking during the event, Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki said the commemoration served as a reminder of the growing challenges journalists face globally. He cited the recent killings of journalists reporting from conflict zones such as Gaza and criticized restrictive media laws in neighboring countries, including Tanzania. Journalists play a vital role in informing the public. However, the recent amendments to Kenya’s cyber laws impose heavy fines that could undermine rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution,” said Faki.
