Leaders and elders from the Awliyahan community in Garissa County are applauding the government for finally recognizing their community that they say had been sidelined for decades. Their statements follows the swearing-in of Aden Abdi Millah as Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs a historic first for the community. Elders call his appointment a turning point, saying it ends years of exclusion and gives them a real seat at the table. They’re now rallying local leaders to unite and ensure the community speaks with one voice in the 2027 general elections.
