Israel announced that its military seized control of a demilitarised buffer zone in the Golan Heights, saying that the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria had 'collapsed' following the rebel takeover of the country. Syria has always insisted that it won't agree a peace deal with Israel unless it withdraws from the whole of the Golan. Israel has refused, citing security concerns.
