Recurring cases of collapsed buildings and construction-related deaths have prompted the government to introduce a new public rating system for the construction sector. Principal Secretary for Public Works Joel Arumonyang says the move is aimed at protecting lives and ending unsafe building practices by enforcing higher standards across the industry. The initiative, announced through national safety awards, will rank contractors and building projects based on compliance, quality and site safety standards. The programme, run by the National Construction Authority, has already recognised projects such as the Nairobi Expressway, the Mwache Dam and affordable housing units, and will expand to cover both public and private developments nationwide. The ministry says the annual exercise run by the National Construction Authority, will also assess site supervisors and lower-tier contractors as part of efforts to strengthen safety oversight at every level of construction.
