EACC urges disbanding of traffic police unit over deep-rooted extortion racket

The ethics and anti-corruption commission is recommending the scrapping off of the current police traffic unit, and periodic rotation of those providing the service to curb extortion. An audit of the national police service has revealed deep-rooted corruption in the police service, with the traffic unit leading in cases of extortion. The report shows traffic police officers subject public service vehicles (PSVS) to daily and route-level extortion and collect "protection fees" from boda boda riders and matatu saccos. The report shows that daily collection targets for the police are set by their seniors with proceeds channeled up the chain of command.
