Kenya Supports Circular Economy to Tackle Waste Management Challenge

Kenya is facing a significant waste management crisis, with nearly 8 million tonnes of waste generated annually. This translates to a staggering 22,000 tonnes of waste produced daily, with each of the country's 50 million citizens contributing half a kilogram of waste daily. As the country grapples with this pressing menace, the government has revealed plans to prioritize circular economy initiatives to combat the escalating waste management challenge and promote sustainable solutions to address environmental concerns. They include three key areas that include ecosystem restoration, climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as circular economy initiatives. Festus K. Ng’eno, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Environment and Climate Change, noted the importance of circular economy practices during the launch of the second edition of the Loop Forum Kenya, hosted by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM).
