Government defends move to commercialize the National Youth Service

The government has defended its move to commercialise the National Youth Service saying training of paramilitary and vocational for the youth can no longer depend entirely on exchequer financing. Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku while appearing before the senate on Wednesday, said the current training of youth at the institution costs 10 billion Shillings annually, saying the initiative will help cut the costs by 4 billion Shillings if well implemented. However, senators raised concerns about the initiative's viability and its justification across various aspects, including its effectiveness in curbing youth unemployment.
