Health authorities are warning that the country is facing a worrying rise in preterm births, one of the leading causes of newborn deaths in Kenya. According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey of 2022, the country’s neonatal mortality rate was at 21 deaths per 1,000 live births, accounting for 51 percent of all under-five deaths and 66 percent of infant deaths. The government says it is intensifying efforts to curb these numbers by scaling up Kangaroo Mother Care, improving maternal nutrition, boosting antenatal clinic attendance and ensuring more mothers deliver under skilled health workers.
