The lack of accessible infrastructure, such as sign language interpreters and other assistive communication tools, continues to be a major obstacle for the deaf community in accessing essential services at hospitals and police stations. Jacob Ireri Mbao, Chief Executive Officer of the Deaf Empowerment Society of Kenya (DESK), says healthcare providers often do not have trained sign language interpreters, making it challenging for deaf patients to report injuries or seek treatment. This issue also extends to law enforcement, where officers are generally unfamiliar with the unique needs of deaf individuals when filing reports or pursuing legal action.
