Residents of Kangir village in Homa Bay County, have launched a community-led effort to prevent flood disaster. The residents have embarked on digging trenches and opening the banks of Ondhedhe River which is currently blocked and posing a serious flooding threat. With heavy rains pounding the region and the long rain season underway, residents fear the situation could worsen, replicating the devastating floods that have displaced them for years. The flooding threat has already disrupted essential services in the area such as health care. A local health facility,Kangir Community Dispensary has so far been closed due to the worsening conditions, prompting the Department of Health to temporarily relocate its services to Alego Primary School.
