Civil society organizations from South West Indian Ocean countries have renewed calls for governments in the region to enforce existing fisheries policies to curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, a growing menace threatening the region’s blue economy.Speaking during a regional workshop in Mombasa County, Doreen Nasimiyu Simiyu, Coordinator of the South West Indian Ocean Tuna Forum, said that stronger enforcement of fisheries laws would help safeguard marine resources and uplift coastal communities that rely heavily on fishing.
