Meli iliyobeba mapipa milioni 1 yaokolewa baada ya kushambuliwa na Wahouthi
Meli ya mafuta ambayo ilikuwa ikiungua kwa wiki kadhaa katika Bahari ya Sham baada ya kushambuliwa na waasi wa Wahouthi wa Yemen, na kutishia kumwagika kwa mafuta imeokolewa, kampuni ya ulinzi imesema Ijumaa.
Meli hiyo Sounion ilikuwa ni maafa yanayo subiriwa kwa katika mkondo huo wa maji, huku ikiwa na mapipa milioni 1 ya mafuta ghafi ambayo ilishambuliwa na baadaye kuharibiwa kwa vilipuzi vilivyotumiwa na Wahouthi wanaoungwa mkono na Iran ikiwa ni sehemu ya kampeni yao juu ya vita vya Israel na Hamas huko Ukanda wa Gaza.
Ilichukua miezi kadhaa kwa waokoaji kuweza kuivuta meli hiyo, kuzima mioto na kushusha mafuta ghafi yaliyobaki..
“Mapema Oktoba, meli hiyo ilivutwa hadi upande wa kaskazini wa mfereji wa Suez ili kupakua mizigo, ambapo hivi sasa zoezi hilo limekamilika.”
Wizara ya Mambo ya Nje ya Marekani ilionya kuwa kuvuja kwa mafuta kutoka katika meli hiyo ya Sounion kungeweza kuwa “mara nne kwa ukubwa wa maafa ya Exxon Valdez” yaliyotokea mwaka 1989 nje ya pwani ya Alaska.
Hakuna maelezo yoyote ya mara moja kutoka kwa Wahouthi, ambao wamekuwa wakiushikilia mji mkuu wa Yemen, Sanaa, kwa zaidi ya muongo mmoja na wamekuwa wakipigana na ushirika wa unaongozwa na Saudi Arabia ambao unaiunga mkono serikali iliyo uhamishoni kwa muda mrefu. - AP
