A freight train derailed on Wednesday evening in Munyuki area, Lugari sub-county, Kakamega county after ten carriages overturned. According to witnesses the accident occurred when the rear wheels of the train disengaged from the rail, causing the wagons to overturn. There was drama as residents rushed to the scene and began looting from the train which was transporting wheat to Uganda. However, police officers arrived at the scene and managed to disperse the crowd preventing further looting of the spilled wheat. Residents claim the railway has not been well maintained for years.
